Our Care

We offer complete midwifery care including prenatal care, labour and birth support and postpartum care of mom, baby and family. Prenatal visits take place at our clinic and last 30 minutes. During this time, our care involves physical assessment of mom and babe, discussion of any lab work or tests, discussing many topics related to pregnancy and birth, as well as plenty of time to address any questions you may have. Prenatal visits occur every 4-6 weeks until 30 weeks, every 2-3 weeks until 36 weeks, then every 1-2 weeks until the baby is born.

We welcome and encourage partners, siblings and anyone else you would like to support you through your pregnancy to attend your prenatal visits.

Throughout your care, any concerns within the pregnancy or newborn care should be directed to the midwives. If we have any medical concerns regarding the pregnancy or newborn, we will refer you to the appropriate specialist. We as midwives have defined scope of practice as set out by the College of Midwives of Alberta.

If any circumstance arises in the pregnancy, birth or postpartum that is out of our scope of practice, we consult with other healthcare professionals.  We also support and refer to alternative therapies where appropriate including chiropractic care, acupuncture, massage therapy, physiotherapy and lactation consultants.

A midwife from the practice is on-call at all times to provide labour and birth support and any other emergent situation that arises. During active labour, a midwife will attend you at your chosen birth place to provide clinical care, encouragement and support and will stay for a few hours after the birth to ensure that mom, baby and family are adjusting well. A second midwife or ‘back-up’ midwife is called to attend closer to the time of birth to help provide extra support.

Postpartum care includes frequent visits in the first week at home, then postpartum visits at the clinic at 3 and 6 weeks. At this time, care is complete and you and your baby can resume care with your Family Doctor.
